  3.     Our story on the Seattle backlash against the migration of
  4. Californians to that city (NATION, Nov. 13) stirred a number of
  5. Westerners to speak out. Some benevolent Washingtonians wrote
  6. that they were embarrassed by reports of discrimination against
  7. Californians, whom they personally welcomed. A member of the
  8. keep-out crowd who described herself as "a permanently rusty
  9. Seattlite" makes her point by downgrading Seattle's attractions
  10. to people from other states -- "including friends." A
  11. California chauvinist snaps, "The worst of California is still
  12. better than the best of Seattle." Readers in the buffer state
  13. of Oregon are sensibly keeping it a rhetoric-free zone.
